Low Bowl Tables Inspired by the work of Alan Peters OBE

In 2015, Williams and Cleal Furniture entered their 25th year in business.

In recognition of this event, Jane wanted to acknowledge the work of Alan Peters OBE, (1933-2009).

Jane was an apprentice of Alan Peters OBE and while working at his workshops, she vividly remembers a low bench incorporating a fluted bowl.

Inspired by this, and with the blessing of Alan's widow Laura, these low bench bowl tables have been produced to celebrate his work.

Known as 'The maker's maker', Alan not only had direct links with the Arts and Crafts Movement, having been apprenticed to Edward Barnsley, but is also widely seen as an exponent of the seventies Bristish Craft Revival.

You can find further images of these tables in our 'Work for Sale' page.

21st Century Furniture IV @ The Millinery Works Gallery

We are pleased to announce that we are going to be exhibiting at this year’s ‘21st Century Furniture IV' at 'The Millinery Works Gallery’, in Islington, from the 10th February - 10th March 2013.

The exhibition is rapidly becoming the major London showcase for bespoke designer-makers.  This is a rare opportunity to see, buy, collect or commission a piece of sublime craftsmanship, produced by the most talented designer makers who practice the hand skills of the Arts & Crafts era and combine them with the design sensibilities of today.  This year is showcasing around 30 of the countries best contemporary furniture makers.

Williams and Cleal are exhibiting a walnut dining table and four matching chairs.

The closest tube station is Angel, on the Northern Line, so if you happen to be in London, it would be well worth a visit.  For more details on directions and opening hours visit the 'Millinery Work Gallery' website.

The eight 'Tree Chairs' are coming to an end now, with half of them finished, and the other half in the process of being glued up.

And, the Olive Ash dresser is just awaiting some carving details to be added to the drawer fronts!

Carving a Niche!

We got involved with a project with a local carver - Tom Preater who carved this stunning religious scene.  We had the easy part of making the massive 2.1m x 1.3m, 4inch thick Oak carving blank.  Leaving Tom to hand carve the entire scene over a number of months.  We next sprayed the carving and helped deliver the finished piece.

Our Steamed Pear console table was recently showcased in this month's issue of Good Woodworking - Issue 259. This speculative piece was originally made for ‘Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design 2012’.  The piece explores the contrast and beauty that timber evokes both in its raw and finished form.
